Connect Haven - Global Anesthetics Zach Hart & Alexandra Wilson, 2019
Two Channels of 16mm and Video to HD Video, insulation foam, plaster tile with sand, brick, and shell dust, inkjet prints, cotton, suitcase, model palm tree, packing tape, folding chairs 8 minutes, 48 seconds on Loop
“Global Anesthetics” introduces a physical, sculptural component that acts as a home to a two channel video. A form based on a functional piece of furniture: a dumb valet. A simple travel and domestic tool used to hang clothes. Upon naming this functional item dumb, we give agency and physical ability to those living who hold the same title without the precursor. A valet, a service industry job created to carry weight for the convenience of visitors. A trip without weight, a convenient and somewhat pacified journey. Aesthetics that surround us begin to dissolve into a gaseous state forming an anesthetic. Anesthetics sprayed through the streets of convenience, mediating a visitor’s engagement with the physical world. Patterns of surfaces, and the materials themselves repeat. Devolving into a confused materiality which forms spaces who desire to capitalize on their authenticity through the tourist gaze. Randomness and the event slowly lose their ability to emerge and shape experience. Visitors attempt to unfold spaces who see with a panoptic gaze. The map acts as a glass which we look through to understand, but simultaneously limits the ability for the event to unfold.
